In the previous part of this tutorial, we conceptualized our website, which is a travel blog, by deciding on a color scheme and structure and by brainstorming some ideas. Now it’s time for the fun part, designing! Open up Photoshop and let’s start. (more…)
This is a cool technique and really easy to do. I used it in Clarion Media’s current splash/under construction page:
I found this article today discussing a handfull of ways to improve your CSS code. It’s mostly tips that help make your code more readable, but it also talks about “resets” and why you should write your XHTML before you touch a stylesheet. Considering I’ve got a website coding tutorial coming down the line (although I’m still working on the design part of that tutorial series), I encourage you to check out the article here. (more…)
I know I said I was done blabbing for tonight, but I just checked the spam section of my comments in WordPress and felt compelled to post this screenshot I took moments ago.
I downloaded the demo for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin on Steam a couple weeks ago and just played through it for the first time tonight. I must say, I was pretty impressed with what I saw. I hadn’t played any of the F.E.A.R. expansions that followed the original F.E.A.R. (I lost count of how many there were), so I don’t know how this ranks among them. Regardless, the atmosphere was terrific and graphics were great. It did seem very similar to the first in the series, but I guess no surprise there. I read that the main gripes with the game were A.I. (which I did pick up on a bit through the brief demo), lack of innovation (as I mentioned), level designs, weak game ending and weak multiplayer. I probably won’t be picking it up unless it goes on sale during one of Steam’s weekend sales (Left 4 Dead is on sale for 50% off this weekend–that’s $25 savings! Too bad I already have it). Mainly due to the fact that I just don’t have much time for gaming nowadays. (more…)
This is a quick and easy tutorial for creating a cool exhaust effect in 3ds Max. It’s great for using with jet airplanes or other vehicles with jet engines, but it has a variety of other uses as well. To do it, we’ll use a particle system called “Super Spray”. When we’re all done, this is what we’ll get:
Before a designer jumps straight into designing, it’s generally good practice to first understand what direction you want to take with your website. What goal is the website trying to achieve? What’s the site’s theme? What will it look like? How will it be structured? These are some of the questions you should ask yourself before you even touch Photoshop. This is what I call the conceptualizing process. Thinking about these questions will help us in our design decisions and give us focus. Otherwise, the design process becomes, more or less, a series of trial and error (although trial and error is still very much a part of designing). (more…)
The web is a great resource for designers. There are TONS of websites out there that offer free stuff like brushes, icons, textures, vector graphics, and other awesome stuff. That being said, I wanted to share with you some of the sites that I go to for design resources. I’m sure you’ll find these places very helpful to your designing. Let me know what you think and if there are any site you think I should add! (more…)
Here’s an easy one. Ever wonder how to curve your text without warping it? The answer is actually quite simple. Typing along paths! We can also type along shapes. Here is an example of what we can do:
I haven’t posted in a while, mainly due to the fact that I’ve been pretty busy recently, particularly with some clients. Anyways, I just want to let you know that I have some tutorials lined up for Photoshop, XHTML/CSS, Java, JavaScript and maybe another 3ds Max one and also a brief overview of design principles. I’m not sure in what order I will do them in, but I thought I’d at least give a quick heads up on what’s on deck. Hopefully I’ll get a couple out this week.
Stay tuned!
